Minimum Swimming Requirements


For the safety of the children, some minimum swimming ability is required, but competitive experience is not necessary.

All NEW SWIMMERS will be evaluated by the Coach at the beginning of the season.

Minimum Swimming Requirements

(Age groups are based on your child’s age as of June 1, 2024)

6 and Under

Must be able to continuously swim, without too much assistance or too much stopping and holding the lane rope or wall, for one length of a 25 yard pool in any stroke.

7 & 8 Year Olds

Must be able to continuously swim, unassisted, without stopping or holding the lane rope or wall, for one length of a 25 yard pool in freestyle and backstroke.

9 &10 Year Olds

Must be able to continuously swim, unassisted, without stopping or holding the lane rope or wall, for one length of a 25 yard pool in freestyle and backstroke.

11 Year Olds and Up

Must be able to continuously swim, unassisted, for 50 yards (two lengths of a 25 yard pool) in freestyle and backstroke. Familiarity with all four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly) is strongly encouraged.

If your child is looking forward to swimming on the swim team this summer, but needs to strengthen or refresh their skills, now is the time to sign them up for swim lessons at one of the local swim facilities or with our coaches. Swim Atlanta, Dynamo and Lifetime Fitness offer swim lessons to prepare your child for the upcoming summer swim team. Practices start in late April, so get started right away!
